July 4th, French style

In 1776 John Adams wanted the day of independence to be "solemnized with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations."  And I suppose he forgot himself and left off the all American hot dogs, potato salad, cole slaw, hamburgers and watermelon.

Yesterday, July 4th, we made a few alterations in the menu, but still had a working man's lunch of fresh grilled mackerel served on a bed of the ripest tomatoes to be found.

The sauce is simply extra fine olive oil and lemon juice, and garlic squished in a mortar with 2 T of fresh thyme....the bits you scrape off the twigs.    Of course a good french champagne to start, ....and then later after raspberry tart brought by Sarah (names will be changed to protect the innocent) , much later in fact...

after 8 hours of delicious conversation, our friends agreed... with out too much convincing to have a " Polish Colonel":    "artisanal" lemon sorbet with a glug of (Potocki Polish) vodka poured over it.   Very refreshing.

We will save the bonfires and illuminations for Bastille Day, July 14th and we will,  for this occasion, even put away all our guns!
