Traditional Sri Lankan Breakfast photo by Anver Deen |
After the intriguing visit to the temple of the tooth relic in Kandy we stepped out into the night with an unplanned dinner. We agreed to try a roti hut instead of the Pizza Hut that was right before our eyes. No one wanted to spend much time looking for the perfect place as we had another 5 am wake up call for the next day.
A roti hut seems to be the equivalent of a "burger joint" in the States. In fact its not big on decor either, just the basics as you would find in any McDonalds or Burger King. This one, at least had a standing toilet which gets it 4 stars just for that.
But regardless of the less than exciting surroundings, the food was really quite good and the price was unbelievable. The huge rotis too were the best we had had so far. For the meal and a drink the price for each of us at our table came to about 250 Sri Lankan rupees which is about a dollar and a half. I may have this wrong so please correct me.... if your were there.
You are wondering what this has to do with the photo.... well, nothing. I bought some postcards and even stamps and never sent them. Typical. This is one of the post cards.
I was too busy stuffing my face at the roti hut to take a picture of what we shared so I invite you to take a look at Sri Lankan Breakfast. I especially go for the egg hoppers but a Sri Lankan omelet ( not pictured but with chilies and onions) is a tasty treat as well.
